Unfortunately all you need is a major life change for you to start to ask these questions. What am I doing here? Whats the purpose of life? What’s my purpose? What am I supposed to do?
While I was living in the addiction, I never really had time to sit and process these questions. Not only that, but at the same time everything in life had to be about me. Was it acceptable to me? If not then it didn’t matter. I had my own sense of morality, but it really didn’t even apply to me at all. I thought everyone should do good and do well for others, yet when it came my turn to sacrifice or do something I didn’t feel like at the time, the laws could be bent.
Because of that frame of mind, those deeper purpose filled questions never entered my mind. I was blinded by them, because I was so caught up in myself and what would be best for me. Living in the addiction my main purpose in life was to find as many partners as possible that would fill my needs and then when I was done I would move onto the next. I wanted everyone to respect and validate me. I wanted to be told that I was the best. The way that life was supposed to be was however I was feeling in a given moment.
I wonder how challenging that was for anyone living with me during that time. Dealing with a completely unaware human being that was always moving the life goalposts.
I never thought I would say that I am thankful that covid happened, but had it not I think theres a pretty good chance that I would be stuck in the behaviors above, and completely obsessed with myself. But covid shutting down my world, made me slow down and ask the questions. What is life’s purpose? There has to be more to life than sitting in my apartment not allowed to go out and experience life.
Thankfully because of that I can do a better Job answering these questions.
What am I doing here? Well i’m not here to just seek pleasure full time. I don’t know exactly why I am here, but God put me here for a reason, and I think each day I start to learn the answer to this question more and more.
What’s the purpose of life? Simple answer would be to find god. I think once you get out of yourself for a little and look around at how beautiful yet fallen our world is, you start to realize that it only makes sense that this isn’t it. And we are living for something more than just ourselves.
Whats my purpose? Well its not to find a new partner to pleasure myself with each day. Its slowly learning each day how I can better do gods will. Protecting my family, living a sober and recovered life. Helping others who are where I was not long ago. My purpose is to learn and finally understand that the world doesn’t revolve around me. I am not the end all be all. God is. Most days I understand that, but there are a lot of days where I need that reminder.
What am I supposed to do? It seems like with everything in life, you start to level up and then meet the boss. So what you think you are supposed to do, you start to question at each phase of life, and then god shows you if thats the way that you’ll go or not. Or you know what you’re supposed to do, yet its not the right time so you need to learn before you grow into what he wants you to do.
For me, since I have experienced Gods love, I have always felt that I was supposed to help other men along this journey. But it came in steps. Had to start the process of healing myself, then my wife, then figuring out the financial side. I wrote a book 2 years into recovery, that still hasn’t come out out. So while I do think this is what I am supposed to do, the timing happens when God wants it to. While I may have thought I could help many people out after 1 year of recovery, having a few more years and life experience has been helpful.
Theres also the family element that takes priority too. They need to be nurtured, loved, and cared for. So I am supposed to do what I can to aline with Gods plan. Each little step of the way helps build and create a foundation.
I hope that you can take some time today, to think and reflect on these questions and reevaluate your life and where you are at. Is your current acting out choices helping you to be able to even think about the purpose of this life? Or what we are even doing here?
Slow down, process, pray and get your life back on a path that leads down the road of happy destiny. (stealing that one from 12 step groups) I also need this reminder as well.
Go get some God. Reflect on these life questions.
God Bless.
